Robert H. Ozaki, President and Chief Executive Officer
Bob was raised in Kuli‘ou‘ou Valley on O‘ahu beneath the shadow of Kohelepelepe, a mountain which has looked over him all of his life. He spent his childhood playing in the wilderness around Kuapa Pond when the mullet and Samoan crab were plentiful and fish hawks filled the sky.
Before joining the Trust in April of 2002, he was the chief executive officer for Hawaii Superferry, a new venture. Prior to that, he was an executive vice president, chief operating officer and chief investment officer for The Queen’s Health Systems (QHS), a $450-million revenue diversified health services and real estate company. At QHS, Bob managed a portfolio of marketable securities and private investments of over $375 million.
Formerly, Bob was an executive vice president for the $2.5 billion in revenue Amfac, Inc., and chairman for Amfac Hawaii, Inc. which encompassed 145,000 acres of land, agribusiness, wholesale distribution, and renewable energy companies.
Blessed with forgiving parents and supportive friends, Bob graduated from Iolani School despite surfing most of the time. His nomadic journey through college started at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota and ended at the University of Hawaii after a detour through Reno, Nevada for commercial flight school.
Fortunate to hear Martin Luther King speak in person and learn folk guitar in Bob Dylan country, Bob joined VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) to establish residential treatment centers for troubled youth in the Oahu communities of Waimanalo and Waianae. He worked for Easter Seals Hawaii and the American Lung Association serving disabled children and adults before joining Stryker Weiner Associates, a Honolulu-based public relations and marketing firm.
Bob is a former Hawaii state chili cook-off champion whose team competed at the World Championship in the Mojave Desert before 25,000 “chili heads.” He is a recipient of the Silver Anvil Award, a national award from the Public Relations Society of America to recognize excellence in communications.
His board memberships and affiliations include the Hawaii International Film Festival, Hawaii Leeward Planning Conference, Honolulu Waldorf School, Institutional Limited Partners Association, Manoa Valley Theater, Nature Conservancy, PBS Hawaii, Urban Land Institute, and Waikiki Improvement Association.
